• Latest World News: Israel-Iran war news: Iranian minister tours site on Netanyahu’s hitlist amid bombing, says ‘not afraid’
In response to Israeli threats, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad visited Kharg Island, emphasizing Iran's resilience. His visit follows missile attacks on Israel and US deliberations on military actions.
As the concerns of potential Israeli air strikes at energy facilities in Iran looms, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad on Sunday visited Kharg Island, the main export terminal of the country and touted that they are “not afraid”. During the visit, Paknejad reportedly held talks with the naval commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Hossein Bargahi.

The minister’s visit comes after an Israeli military spokesman said the country was “preparing a response” after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel this week.

As many as 200 missiles were fired to avenge the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian general Abbas Nilforoushan in a September 27 strike on Beirut.

According to Iran oil ministry’s news website, SHANA, Paknejad arrived at the Kharg Island oil facilities in the morning and met with employees.

“We are not afraid that our enemies will ignite a crisis, and visiting the region is a normal business trip,” Paknejad said on state television. He shared that the Kharg Island oil terminal has a capacity to store 23 million barrels of crude.

The oil minister also hailed the Guards for “continuous efforts in maintaining the security” of Iranian oil platforms in the Gulf.

Mohsen Paknejad’s visit follows Israel’s announcement that it was preparing a response to Iran’s missile attack on Tuesday on its territory.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden said he was “in discussions” with Israel about possible strikes on oil facilities in Iran.

Following the statement, oil prices had surged.

But on Friday, Biden advised Israel against striking Iran’s oil facilities, telling it to find “other alternatives”.

Iran is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) with production of around 3.2 million barrels per day (bpd), or 3% of global output.

Despite US sanctions, Iranian oil exports have climbed this year to near multi-year highs of 1.7 million bpd. China, which does not recognise US sanctions, is Tehran’s biggest oil customer and according to analysts imported 1.2 to 1.4 million barrels per day from Iran in the first half of 2024.

Following the Israeli threats, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday warned of “a proportional and similar reaction from Iran, and even stronger” should Israel strike Iran.

US Presidential elections: Billionaire tech executive Elon Musk on Saturday made an appearance at Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. This is the same site where Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in July, wounding his right ear.

While addressing the rally, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla wore a black-on-black cap bearing the “Make America Great Again” slogan of Trump’s campaign. “As you can see I am not just MAGA — I am Dark MAGA,” Musk joked.

The billionaire has also changed his social media profile picture with slogan of Trump’s campaign. As Trump welcomed him on the stage, Musk said, “The true test of someone’s character is how they behave under fire.”

During his speech, he also took a jibe at President Joe Biden and said, “We had one president who couldn’t climb a flight of stairs and another who was fist-pumping after getting shot… Fight, Fight, Fight! Blood coming down the face. American is the home of the brave…So who do you want representing America?”

On July 14, Musk said that he ‘fully endorses’ former US president Donald Trump, and hoped for his speedy recovery, after the shooting at US presidential candidate. “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on X, along with a visual of Secret Service agents helping Trump get off the stage.

The “Iranian government has produced an assassination list of top targets within Israel,” said many social media user while sharing the viral “hit list” this week.
Iran’s “execution list” has been widely shared on social media for the past few days. Sharing the list, many claimed on social media the “Iranian Government has produced an assassination list of top targets within Israel!!” The viral “hit list” showed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the top of the chart.

The list names several prominent Israeli figures – including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and the commanders of Israel’s Army, Navy, and Air Force. Mint could not verify the authenticity of the viral picture of Iran’s “hit list”.

The purported “Execution list of Israeli terrorists” include these names:

    1. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

    2. Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant

    3. Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi

    4. Commander of the Israeli Air Force Tomer Bar

    5. Head of Northern Command Ori Gordin

    6. Commander of the Israeli Navy Saar Salama

    7. Deputy Chief of the General Staff Amir Baram

    8. Head of Central Command Yehuda Fox

    9. Chief of Ground Forces Tamir Yadai

    10. Head of Military Intelligence Aharon Haliva

    11. Head of Southern Command Eliezer Toledano

The list was widely shared on October 2.

Israel is currently engaged in a “multi-front war” with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran backs both Hamas and Hezbollah. The war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas started in October when the group launched surprise attacks in parts of Israel.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah, the strongest armed force in Lebanon, began firing rockets into Israel almost immediately after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, calling it a show of support for the Palestinians. Hezbollah and Israel’s military have traded fire almost daily.

Last week, Israel launched what it called a limited ground operation into southern Lebanon after a series of attacks killed longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others. The fighting is the worst since Israel and Hezbollah fought a brief war in 2006. Nine Israeli soldiers have been killed in the ground clashes that Israel says have killed 440 Hezbollah fighters.

The Israeli military said special forces were carrying out ground raids against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. On Saturday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “Israel has the duty and the right to defend itself and respond to these attacks, and it will do so.” On Lebanon, he said ”we are not done yet.”

  • Latest World News: ‘Will never quit, never bend,’ says Donald Trump at site of July assassination attempt in Pennsylvania: 10 points
US Presidential Elections 2024: “As I was saying…,” Donald Trump said as he appeared on stage, pretending he was resuming the speech that was interrupted when he was grazed in the ear by a bullet on July 13.
Former US President Donald Trump returned on Saturday to the site of a campaign rally where an assassin’s bullet bruised his ear in July. It was Butler, Pennsylvania, where he vowed on Saturday that he would “never quit… never bend… never break”. As the Republican leader spoke from behind a bulletproof glass, the crowd cheered: “Fight, fight, fight”.

“Fight, fight, fight” echoed Trump’s rallying cry just after the July 13 shooting that grazed his ear and briefly upended the campaign for November’s election. Speaking from the same spot on Saturday, here’s what he said:

    1. “As I was saying…,”Donald Trump kicked off his speech with the immigration chart he was looking at when gunshots rang out in July. He pretended he was resuming the speech that was interrupted when he was grazed in the ear by a bullet on July 13.

    2. “I will never quit. I will never bend, I will never break. I will never yield. Not even in the face of death itself,” Trump said at the rally.

    3. “We fought together. We have endured together. We have pushed onward together,” Trump said. “And right here in Pennsylvania, we have bled together. We’ve bled,” he added.

    4. Donald Trump urged a large crowd to deliver an Election Day victory that he tied to his survival of the shooting. “And if we win Pennsylvania, we will win the whole thing,” Trump said Saturday.

    5. Trump on Saturday suggested his opponents had “maybe even tried to **** me”. He said ominously, “I wasn’t supposed to make it.” In his speech, Trump hinted without evidence about facing “an enemy from within” more dangerous than a foreign adversary.

    6. At exactly 6:11, the moment Trump was shot 12 weeks ago, the former president asked for a moment of silence as classical singer Christopher Macchio sang “Ave Maria” for roughly four minutes. A bell then tolled four times, once for each of the four victims, including Trump.

    7. Standing behind protective glass that now encases the stage at his outdoor rallies, Trump called the would-be assassin “a vicious monster” and said he did not succeed “by the hand of providence and the grace of God.” There was a very visible heightened security presence, with armed law enforcers in camouflage uniforms on roofs.

    8. In mid-speech, Donald Trump called up on stage Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of social media platform X. It was his first time at a Trump campaign event since he endorsed the former president after July 13.

    9. Musk jumped up on stage, pumping his fists in the air. “The true test of someone’s character is how they behave under fire,” Musk said, calling the election a “must-win situation” for Trump and urging the crowd to register to vote. “Be a pest to everyone you know,” Musk said.

    10. Ohio Republican Senator JD Vance, Trump’s vice presidential running mate, rejected the argument from Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats that Trump represents a threat to democracy. “Donald Trump took a bullet for democracy. What the hell have you done?” Vance said.

  • Latest World News: Israel, Hezbollah conflict to escalate? Heavy fire exchange raises fear of all-out war: What we know so far
Lebanon's Hezbollah said it launched over 100 rockets early Sunday across a wider and deeper area of northern Israel. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes reportedly carried out the “most intense bombardment” in almost a year of war across Lebanon's south, reports said.
Israel and Hezbollah exchanged heavy fire on Sunday. Hezbollah said it targeted the Israeli Ramat David Airbase with dozens of missiles in response to “repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanon”, the Iran-backed group posted on its Telegram channel early on Sunday. Israel quickly responded, striking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, the military said in a statement.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah said it launched over 100 rockets early Sunday across a wider and deeper area of northern Israel. Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes reportedly carried out the “most intense bombardment” in almost a year of war across Lebanon’s south,” AFP reported.

The barrage came after an Israeli airstrike in Beirut on Friday killed at least 45 people, raising fears of all-out war. Hezbollah reportedy said it will keep fighting Israel until it agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza.

What’s happening in Israel, Iran and Lebanon? Here’s all the latest you need to know:

    1. An Israeli air strike targeted Hezbollah military commanders in Beirut southern suburbs on Friday. The Lebanon’s health ministry said, “The number of dead [in Friday’s attack] has risen to 45 people.”

    2. Senior Hezbollah commanders were among those who died in Friday’s attack. Iran-backed Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of two senior commanders, including Radwan Force chief Ibrahim Aqil, in an Israeli airstrike on its Beirut base, news agency AFP reported.

    3. On Saturday, Israeli warplanes pounded southern Lebanon Saturday, raising fears of all-out war, news agency AFP reported. The Israeli attacks came as Hezbollah already reels from a sophisticated attack that caused thousands of personal devices to explode just days earlier.

    4. On Sunday, Lebanon’s Hezbollah launched over 100 rockets across a wider and deeper area of northern Israel, with some landing near the city of Haifa. The Israeli military said rockets had been fired “toward civilian areas,” pointing to a possible escalation after previous barrages had mainly been aimed at military targets.

Hezbollah said it had launched dozens of Fadi 1 and Fadi 2 missiles — a new type of weapon the group had not used before — at the Ramat David airbase, southeast of Haifa, “in response to the repeated Israeli attacks that targeted various Lebanese regions and led to the fall of many civilian martyrs.”

    5. Meanwhile, Israeli media reported that rockets fired from Lebanon early Sunday were intercepted in the areas of Haifa and Nazareth. Israel canceled school across the north, deepening the sense of crisis.

The Israel Defense Forces said on X, “Hundreds of thousands of Israeli civilians spent their night hiding in bomb shelters, while barrages of rockets were flying over their heads, some hitting their homes, and rocket alert sirens were constantly sounding throughout the night. Thousands of children will stay in bomb shelters today instead of going to school due to the risk to their lives.

    5. In a separate development, Israeli forces raided the West Bank bureau of Al-Jazeera, which it had banned earlier this year, accusing it of serving as a mouthpiece for militant groups, allegations denied by the pan-Arab broadcaster.

Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza nearly a year ago. The low-level fighting has killed dozens of people in Israel, hundreds in Lebanon, and displaced tens of thousands on both sides of the frontier.

The war in Gaza began with Hamas‘ October 7 attack into Israel, in which Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people and took around 250 hostage. They are still holding around 100 captives, a third of whom are believed to be dead. Gaza’s Health Ministry says over 41,000 Palestinians have been killed. It does not say how many were fighters but says women and children make up over half of the dead.
