  • Latest World News: China Orders Military Drills Around Taiwan to ‘Warn’ Lai
China’s armed forces held more drills around Taiwan that it said were intended as a warning to the democratically run government to halt “separatist acts.”

The exercises on Monday involved army, navy, air and rocket forces, a spokesperson for the Chinese military said in a statement on social media. State broadcaster China Central Television posted a map that showed six large red blocks around Taiwan where the drills occurred, and three smaller red circles that marked offshore outposts.

The military activity was “a stern warning to the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces,” the spokesperson said. “It is a legitimate and necessary operation for safeguarding state sovereignty and national unity.”

The drills underscore China’s persistent efforts to squeeze new Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. They were named “Joint Sword-2024B,” following on from the “2024A” exercises held right after his inauguration in May. Like exercises two years ago after then House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei, the People’s Liberation Army appeared to be practicing a blockade of Taiwan — a semiconductor hub that sits next to a key shipping lane.

China has used a range of tactics to try to pressure Lai since he won election in January, including peeling off one of Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies, ordering increased Coast Guard activity around islets that Taipei controls and ending tariff exemptions on some agricultural products from the archipelago of 23 million people.

On Saturday, Beijing said it was studying “adopting further measures” against Taiwan for banning certain Chinese shipments. Taiwan responded by saying China was using cross-strait trade as a political weapon.

The latest PLA activity came after Lai said in a speech last week that he’d stand up to the challenges posed by China, which views Taiwan as territory that must be brought under its control, by force if necessary. Last month, Lai held the first meeting of a civil defense committee aimed at keep the archipelago resilient in any emergency.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry condemned Beijing’s latest military actions, saying in a statement that it dispatched forces to respond, though without providing details. It also said Lai’s speech on National Day highlighted his firm determination to maintain peace and stability in the strait.

The US backs Taiwan with arms sales that anger Beijing, and also politically and economically. President Joe Biden has said four times the US would defend the chipmaking hub from a Chinese attack, though he’s also said he doesn’t support independence for Taiwan — a red line for Beijing.

  • At least 11 people have been killed and eight more have sustained injuries in a clash between two tribes in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, Al Jazeera reported.

Tensions rose in the Kurram district of the province after two people were critically injured in a shooting incident between rival tribes in the northwestern part of the country. However, the reason for the clashes is not known.

As the violence spread, vehicles were targeted in different areas of the district which led to many more casualties, as noted by senior official Javedullah Khan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is known to be home to over 40 million people who come from various tribal groups and identities.

Khan said the injured were taken to a hospital, and efforts were being made to secure travel routes and restore normalcy. The injured were taken to a hospital.

Pir Haider Ali Shah, a former parliamentarian and member of a tribal council, said elders had arrived in Kurram to mediate a peace agreement between the tribes.

“The recent firing incidents are regrettable and have hampered efforts for lasting peace,” he said.

Notably, tribal group meetings also known as ‘Jirgas‘ are routinely held to ensure peace and stability in the region, as reported by Al Jazeera.

In another incident last month, at least 25 people were killed in days of clashes between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute.

Although both communities live together largely peacefully in the country, tensions have existed for decades between them in some areas, especially in Kurram, where Shia Muslims dominate in parts of the district, according to Al Jazeera.

Clashes in the area have seen an uptick as last month alone over 20 people were killed between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute.

Although both live together largely peacefully in the country, tensions have existed for decades between them in some areas, especially in Kurram, where Shia Muslims dominate in parts of the district, Al Jazeera noted.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for attacks at a coal mine in Balochistan which saw the death of over 20 individuals including Pakistani as well as Afghan nationals. The attack had involved the use of heavy weapons, rocket launchers and grenades.

Such attacks have become common in Balochistan, the southern part of the country known to be home to key natural resources but whose benefits do not translate to uplifting the citizens’ quality of life there.

The outfits operating from Balochistan accuse the central government in Islamabad of exploiting the province’s rich oil and mineral resources to the detriment of the local population in the country’s largest and least-populated province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan.

These groups have also expressed their anger against foreign nationals coming in for resource extraction but deriving profits without benefiting the locals. Attacks on international convoys have thus become a key way for citizens to register protests.

BLA gave a higher casualty figure of 30 dead and 18 injured in the incident. It also said that Pakistani security personnel were disguised as workers, without giving evidence. It threatened more assaults unless the military withdrew from the province.

Balochistan has been a hotbed of armed movements, with the BLA most prominent among them.

Last week, the BLA – designated a “terrorist group” by Pakistan, the United Kingdom and the United States – claimed responsibility for an attack targeting Chinese nationals near Pakistan’s largest airport, Al Jazeera reported.

The Chinese embassy in Pakistan said at least two of its citizens were killed and a third injured after their convoy was targeted with an improvised explosive device believed to have been detonated by a suicide bomber.

At least 10 people were injured in total, with four cars destroyed in the explosion and 10 more vehicles damaged in the resulting fire, local media reported.

  • Israel on Saturday ordered evacuation of 23 southern Lebanese villages located north of the Awali River, which flows from the western Bekaa Valley into the Mediterranean.

In a message addressed to south Lebanese, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee wrote on X: “For your own protection, do not return to your homes until further notice… Do not go south; anyone who goes south may put his life at risk.”

The Israeli military in its order has mentioned villages in southern Lebanon that have been recent targets of Israeli attacks.

Evacuations were necessary for the safety of residents due to increased Hezbollah activities, the Israeli military said.

It also claimed that the group is using sites to conceal weapons and launch attacks on Israel.

However, Hezbollah has denied concealing its weapons among civilians.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which erupted a year ago when the Iranian-backed group began launching rockets at northern Israel in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza war, has dramatically escalated over the past month.

According to the Lebanese government, due to intensified Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and the southern suburbs of Beirut, approximately 1.2 million people were forced to leave their homes since September 23.

More Lebanese have now been displaced than during the last major war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, when around 1 million fled their homes, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Saturday.

Hezbollah said on Saturday it launched a drone attack on a military base in north Israel’s Haifa a day earlier.

In a statement the group said its fighters were “targeting the explosives factory there with a salvo of… missiles”.

On Friday, Israel faced severe diplomatic backlash over what it said was a “hit” on a United Nations peacekeeping position in Lebanon.

Two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were hurt in the second such incident in two days, the UNIFIL mission said on Friday.

Siddique represented the Bandra (West) seat for the NCP party three times in the assembly. The police suspect it to be a pre-planned act, according to a police official quoted in the agency report.

  • Latest World News: Israel-Iran war news: Iranian minister tours site on Netanyahu’s hitlist amid bombing, says ‘not afraid’
In response to Israeli threats, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad visited Kharg Island, emphasizing Iran's resilience. His visit follows missile attacks on Israel and US deliberations on military actions.
As the concerns of potential Israeli air strikes at energy facilities in Iran looms, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad on Sunday visited Kharg Island, the main export terminal of the country and touted that they are “not afraid”. During the visit, Paknejad reportedly held talks with the naval commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Hossein Bargahi.

The minister’s visit comes after an Israeli military spokesman said the country was “preparing a response” after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel this week.

As many as 200 missiles were fired to avenge the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian general Abbas Nilforoushan in a September 27 strike on Beirut.

According to Iran oil ministry’s news website, SHANA, Paknejad arrived at the Kharg Island oil facilities in the morning and met with employees.

“We are not afraid that our enemies will ignite a crisis, and visiting the region is a normal business trip,” Paknejad said on state television. He shared that the Kharg Island oil terminal has a capacity to store 23 million barrels of crude.

The oil minister also hailed the Guards for “continuous efforts in maintaining the security” of Iranian oil platforms in the Gulf.

Mohsen Paknejad’s visit follows Israel’s announcement that it was preparing a response to Iran’s missile attack on Tuesday on its territory.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden said he was “in discussions” with Israel about possible strikes on oil facilities in Iran.

Following the statement, oil prices had surged.

But on Friday, Biden advised Israel against striking Iran’s oil facilities, telling it to find “other alternatives”.

Iran is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) with production of around 3.2 million barrels per day (bpd), or 3% of global output.

Despite US sanctions, Iranian oil exports have climbed this year to near multi-year highs of 1.7 million bpd. China, which does not recognise US sanctions, is Tehran’s biggest oil customer and according to analysts imported 1.2 to 1.4 million barrels per day from Iran in the first half of 2024.

Following the Israeli threats, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday warned of “a proportional and similar reaction from Iran, and even stronger” should Israel strike Iran.

While addressing the rally, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla wore a black-on-black cap bearing the “Make America Great Again” slogan of Trump’s campaign. “As you can see I am not just MAGA — I am Dark MAGA,” Musk joked.

The billionaire has also changed his social media profile picture with slogan of Trump’s campaign. As Trump welcomed him on the stage, Musk said, “The true test of someone’s character is how they behave under fire.”

During his speech, he also took a jibe at President Joe Biden and said, “We had one president who couldn’t climb a flight of stairs and another who was fist-pumping after getting shot… Fight, Fight, Fight! Blood coming down the face. American is the home of the brave…So who do you want representing America?”

On July 14, Musk said that he ‘fully endorses’ former US president Donald Trump, and hoped for his speedy recovery, after the shooting at US presidential candidate. “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on X, along with a visual of Secret Service agents helping Trump get off the stage.

    Trump recalls July assassination attempt

Trump recalled the July assassination attempt saying, “I will never quit. I will never bend. I will never break. I will never yield, not even in the face of death itself.”

Trump asked for his supporters to hold a moment of silence marking the minute shots were fired at him at the previous Butler rally. The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by law enforcement on site. One rallygoer was killed and two others were injured.

  • Latest World News: Iran’s viral ‘hit list’ has Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu on top, 10 others on ‘target’ are…
The “Iranian government has produced an assassination list of top targets within Israel,” said many social media user while sharing the viral “hit list” this week.
Iran’s “execution list” has been widely shared on social media for the past few days. Sharing the list, many claimed on social media the “Iranian Government has produced an assassination list of top targets within Israel!!” The viral “hit list” showed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the top of the chart.

The list names several prominent Israeli figures – including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and the commanders of Israel’s Army, Navy, and Air Force. Mint could not verify the authenticity of the viral picture of Iran’s “hit list”.

The purported “Execution list of Israeli terrorists” include these names:

    1. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

    2. Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant

    3. Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi

    4. Commander of the Israeli Air Force Tomer Bar

    5. Head of Northern Command Ori Gordin

    6. Commander of the Israeli Navy Saar Salama

    7. Deputy Chief of the General Staff Amir Baram

    8. Head of Central Command Yehuda Fox

    9. Chief of Ground Forces Tamir Yadai

    10. Head of Military Intelligence Aharon Haliva

    11. Head of Southern Command Eliezer Toledano

The list was widely shared on October 2.

Israel is currently engaged in a “multi-front war” with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran backs both Hamas and Hezbollah. The war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas started in October when the group launched surprise attacks in parts of Israel.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah, the strongest armed force in Lebanon, began firing rockets into Israel almost immediately after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, calling it a show of support for the Palestinians. Hezbollah and Israel’s military have traded fire almost daily.

Last week, Israel launched what it called a limited ground operation into southern Lebanon after a series of attacks killed longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others. The fighting is the worst since Israel and Hezbollah fought a brief war in 2006. Nine Israeli soldiers have been killed in the ground clashes that Israel says have killed 440 Hezbollah fighters.

The Israeli military said special forces were carrying out ground raids against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. On Saturday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “Israel has the duty and the right to defend itself and respond to these attacks, and it will do so.” On Lebanon, he said ”we are not done yet.”
