  • Baba Siddique murder: The shooters who killed NCP leader Baba Siddique had planned to murder his son Zeeshan Siddique as well, said Mumbai Police on Monday. One of the accused persons arrested in the case admitted that the contract included the assassination of the father-son duo.

According to the police, Zeeshan Siddique had received threats a few days before the murder of his father, Baba Siddique.

“The accused told during interrogation that both Zeeshan and Baba Siddiqui were on the target, and they were ordered to fire on anyone they found. Zeeshan Siddiqui was also the accused’s target. The accused were given a contract to **** both Zeeshan and Baba Siddiqui,” ANI quoted Mumbai police on Monday.

According to media reports, Baba Siddique had also received a threat to his life nearly a fortnight ago before his murder. The former Maharashtra minister was shot at outside his MLA son Zeeshan Siddique’s office near Colgate ground in Nirmal Nagar, Bandra East, on October 12. The senior politician was later rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he succumbed to his bullet injury.

Baba Siddique’s security cover was upgraded to the Y category after he received multiple threats to his life. According to police, a constable was present at the time of the murder, but he couldn’t save Siddique.

“Baba Siddique didn’t have a categorised security, but he was given 3 security personnel from Mumbai police. At the time of the incident, one of our security personnel was there with him. We are investigating all angles to this case, including Salman Khan and Lawrence Bishnoi’s angles,” ANI quoted DCP Crime Branch Datta Nalawade on Sunday.

Baba Siddique was a three-time MLA from Bandra West Assembly, whereas his son Zeeshan Siddique is the current MLA from Bandra East. The police have arrested four accused in Baba Siddique murder case, including two main shooters, Gurmail Singh, Dharmaraj Kashyap. Two more people associated with Siddique’s assassination, Pravin Lonkar and Shubham Lonkar have also been arrested.

  • Latest World News: China-Taiwan conflict: Taipei not to escalate tensions after Beijing’s ‘major warning’
China–Taiwan conflict: Taiwan’s Defence Ministry announced Monday it would not escalate tensions in response to China’s latest military exercises but has heightened its alert on outlying islands while closely monitoring the movements of China’s rocket forces, as per a report by Reuters.

The drills, which encircled Taiwan and nearby islands, were described by China as a warning against the island’s pursuit of independence. In a statement, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry criticised the exercises, saying they jeopardise security in the Taiwan Strait.

“China’s irrational and provocative military exercises jeopardise the security situation in the Taiwan Strait and are not conducive to the healthy development of cross-strait relations,” the ministry said in a statement, reported Reuters.

China’s Defense Ministry framed the manoeuvers as a response to Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te’s refusal to yield to Beijing’s demands that Taiwan recognise itself as part of the People’s Republic of China. Lai, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), took office in May, continuing his party’s policy of rejecting Beijing’s claims, as per the Associated Press.

Taiwan’s military said its forces are prepared to respond if needed but emphasised it would not provoke further conflict.

    What was China‘s threat about?
China’s Eastern Theater Command confirmed the mobilisation of multiple branches, including the navy, air force, army, and missile units, for the drills. “This is a major warning to those who back Taiwan independence and a signifier of our determination to safeguard our national sovereignty,” said Captain Li Xi, a spokesperson for the command, as quoted by AP.

The exercises reflect Beijing’s increasing pressure on Taiwan, which it views as a breakaway province. China has consistently warned that Taiwan independence is a “dead end” and insists unification is inevitable.

The historical tension dates back to 1949 when the Nationalist government, led by Chiang Kai-shek, retreated to Taiwan after losing to Mao Zedong’s Communists on the mainland. Taiwan operates as a self-governed democracy but has never officially declared independence.

With cross-strait relations strained, Taiwan’s government reiterated its commitment to self-defence while signalling a desire to avoid unnecessary escalation.

  • Latest World News: China Orders Military Drills Around Taiwan to ‘Warn’ Lai
China’s armed forces held more drills around Taiwan that it said were intended as a warning to the democratically run government to halt “separatist acts.”

The exercises on Monday involved army, navy, air and rocket forces, a spokesperson for the Chinese military said in a statement on social media. State broadcaster China Central Television posted a map that showed six large red blocks around Taiwan where the drills occurred, and three smaller red circles that marked offshore outposts.

The military activity was “a stern warning to the separatist acts of ‘Taiwan independence’ forces,” the spokesperson said. “It is a legitimate and necessary operation for safeguarding state sovereignty and national unity.”

The drills underscore China’s persistent efforts to squeeze new Taiwan President Lai Ching-te. They were named “Joint Sword-2024B,” following on from the “2024A” exercises held right after his inauguration in May. Like exercises two years ago after then House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei, the People’s Liberation Army appeared to be practicing a blockade of Taiwan — a semiconductor hub that sits next to a key shipping lane.

China has used a range of tactics to try to pressure Lai since he won election in January, including peeling off one of Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies, ordering increased Coast Guard activity around islets that Taipei controls and ending tariff exemptions on some agricultural products from the archipelago of 23 million people.

On Saturday, Beijing said it was studying “adopting further measures” against Taiwan for banning certain Chinese shipments. Taiwan responded by saying China was using cross-strait trade as a political weapon.

The latest PLA activity came after Lai said in a speech last week that he’d stand up to the challenges posed by China, which views Taiwan as territory that must be brought under its control, by force if necessary. Last month, Lai held the first meeting of a civil defense committee aimed at keep the archipelago resilient in any emergency.

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry condemned Beijing’s latest military actions, saying in a statement that it dispatched forces to respond, though without providing details. It also said Lai’s speech on National Day highlighted his firm determination to maintain peace and stability in the strait.

The US backs Taiwan with arms sales that anger Beijing, and also politically and economically. President Joe Biden has said four times the US would defend the chipmaking hub from a Chinese attack, though he’s also said he doesn’t support independence for Taiwan — a red line for Beijing.

In related weather news, the city recorded a minimum temperature of 18.6 degrees Celsius, slightly below the seasonal average. The maximum temperature is anticipated to rise to around 35 degrees Celsius. This move is part of ongoing efforts to improve air quality and public health amid rising pollution levels.

Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai made the announcement and urged Delhi residents to support the government’s efforts to curb air pollution.

  • At least 11 people have been killed and eight more have sustained injuries in a clash between two tribes in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Saturday, Al Jazeera reported.

Tensions rose in the Kurram district of the province after two people were critically injured in a shooting incident between rival tribes in the northwestern part of the country. However, the reason for the clashes is not known.

As the violence spread, vehicles were targeted in different areas of the district which led to many more casualties, as noted by senior official Javedullah Khan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is known to be home to over 40 million people who come from various tribal groups and identities.

Khan said the injured were taken to a hospital, and efforts were being made to secure travel routes and restore normalcy. The injured were taken to a hospital.

Pir Haider Ali Shah, a former parliamentarian and member of a tribal council, said elders had arrived in Kurram to mediate a peace agreement between the tribes.

“The recent firing incidents are regrettable and have hampered efforts for lasting peace,” he said.

Notably, tribal group meetings also known as ‘Jirgas‘ are routinely held to ensure peace and stability in the region, as reported by Al Jazeera.

In another incident last month, at least 25 people were killed in days of clashes between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute.

Although both communities live together largely peacefully in the country, tensions have existed for decades between them in some areas, especially in Kurram, where Shia Muslims dominate in parts of the district, according to Al Jazeera.

Clashes in the area have seen an uptick as last month alone over 20 people were killed between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute.

Although both live together largely peacefully in the country, tensions have existed for decades between them in some areas, especially in Kurram, where Shia Muslims dominate in parts of the district, Al Jazeera noted.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for attacks at a coal mine in Balochistan which saw the death of over 20 individuals including Pakistani as well as Afghan nationals. The attack had involved the use of heavy weapons, rocket launchers and grenades.

Such attacks have become common in Balochistan, the southern part of the country known to be home to key natural resources but whose benefits do not translate to uplifting the citizens’ quality of life there.

The outfits operating from Balochistan accuse the central government in Islamabad of exploiting the province’s rich oil and mineral resources to the detriment of the local population in the country’s largest and least-populated province, which borders Iran and Afghanistan.

These groups have also expressed their anger against foreign nationals coming in for resource extraction but deriving profits without benefiting the locals. Attacks on international convoys have thus become a key way for citizens to register protests.

BLA gave a higher casualty figure of 30 dead and 18 injured in the incident. It also said that Pakistani security personnel were disguised as workers, without giving evidence. It threatened more assaults unless the military withdrew from the province.

Balochistan has been a hotbed of armed movements, with the BLA most prominent among them.

Last week, the BLA – designated a “terrorist group” by Pakistan, the United Kingdom and the United States – claimed responsibility for an attack targeting Chinese nationals near Pakistan’s largest airport, Al Jazeera reported.

The Chinese embassy in Pakistan said at least two of its citizens were killed and a third injured after their convoy was targeted with an improvised explosive device believed to have been detonated by a suicide bomber.

At least 10 people were injured in total, with four cars destroyed in the explosion and 10 more vehicles damaged in the resulting fire, local media reported.

  • A group of lawmakers within the ruling Liberal Party in Canada are building pressure on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down, news agency Bloomberg reported on Sunday.

According to a CBC News report citing sources, at least 20 dissatisfied MPs met in Ottawa this week. They signed a document calling for a change in leadership.

The move followed a recent by-election loss for the Liberal Party in Montreal and Toronto, prompting a series of secretive meetings among dissatisfied MPs, against Trudeau, who has led Canada since 2015.

According to CBC News, at least 20 leaders have signed the document in Ottawa calling for a change in leadership.

Earlier Toronto Star, citing unidentified people, reported about an effort to publicly pressure on Prime Minister Trudeau to step down. The report further said at least 30 to 40 MPs are ready to sign a letter demanding a change in leadership. The number of dissenting MPs, however, may fall short of a critical mass.

It is important to note that the Liberal Party holds 153 seats in the House of Commons in Canada.

The prime minister’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Unlike the traditional letter demanding Trudeau’s resignation, the dissenting leaders are asking the dissatisfied MPs to sign a document as a pledge to secure a commitment from MPs to push for Trudeau’s resignation.

Meanwhile, Canadian Press has reported trade minister Mary Ng, who’s traveling back to Canada from Laos with Trudeau, as saying that she was disappointed to read about the MPs’ plan. She added that she has full confidence in Prime Minister Trudeau.

In September, the Canadian prime minister suffered a setback when a parliamentary pact with another party, which had kept Trudeau in power, fell apart. Later in the month, he survived an attempt from the opposition Conservative Party to force an election.

Earlier on Friday, the Canadian Prime Minister said he had met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of a summit in Laos and spoke to him about the “work that we need to do”.

Ties between the two nations were strained after Trudeau had alleged India’s involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada’s Surrey city last year.

• Israel on Saturday ordered evacuation of 23 southern Lebanese villages located north of the Awali River, which flows from the western Bekaa Valley into the Mediterranean.

In a message addressed to south Lebanese, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee wrote on X: “For your own protection, do not return to your homes until further notice… Do not go south; anyone who goes south may put his life at risk.”

The Israeli military in its order has mentioned villages in southern Lebanon that have been recent targets of Israeli attacks.

Evacuations were necessary for the safety of residents due to increased Hezbollah activities, the Israeli military said.

It also claimed that the group is using sites to conceal weapons and launch attacks on Israel.

However, Hezbollah has denied concealing its weapons among civilians.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which erupted a year ago when the Iranian-backed group began launching rockets at northern Israel in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza war, has dramatically escalated over the past month.

According to the Lebanese government, due to intensified Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and the southern suburbs of Beirut, approximately 1.2 million people were forced to leave their homes since September 23.

More Lebanese have now been displaced than during the last major war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, when around 1 million fled their homes, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Saturday.

Hezbollah said on Saturday it launched a drone attack on a military base in north Israel’s Haifa a day earlier.

In a statement the group said its fighters were “targeting the explosives factory there with a salvo of… missiles”.

On Friday, Israel faced severe diplomatic backlash over what it said was a “hit” on a United Nations peacekeeping position in Lebanon.

Two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were hurt in the second such incident in two days, the UNIFIL mission said on Friday.
