DNA barcoding is a molecular technique with the principle of using 400-800 bp long standardized unique DNA sequences to differentiate and assign taxonomy to species. DNA barcoding allows for fast, reliable, automatable and cost-effective species identification by users with little or no taxonomic experience. Identifications are usually made by comparing unknown sequences against known species DNA barcodes via alignment searching (BLAST) or distance-based tree construction.
