  • Israel on Saturday ordered evacuation of 23 southern Lebanese villages located north of the Awali River, which flows from the western Bekaa Valley into the Mediterranean.

In a message addressed to south Lebanese, Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee wrote on X: “For your own protection, do not return to your homes until further notice… Do not go south; anyone who goes south may put his life at risk.”

The Israeli military in its order has mentioned villages in southern Lebanon that have been recent targets of Israeli attacks.

Evacuations were necessary for the safety of residents due to increased Hezbollah activities, the Israeli military said.

It also claimed that the group is using sites to conceal weapons and launch attacks on Israel.

However, Hezbollah has denied concealing its weapons among civilians.

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, which erupted a year ago when the Iranian-backed group began launching rockets at northern Israel in support of Hamas at the start of the Gaza war, has dramatically escalated over the past month.

According to the Lebanese government, due to intensified Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley and the southern suburbs of Beirut, approximately 1.2 million people were forced to leave their homes since September 23.

More Lebanese have now been displaced than during the last major war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006, when around 1 million fled their homes, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said on Saturday.

Hezbollah said on Saturday it launched a drone attack on a military base in north Israel’s Haifa a day earlier.

In a statement the group said its fighters were “targeting the explosives factory there with a salvo of… missiles”.

On Friday, Israel faced severe diplomatic backlash over what it said was a “hit” on a United Nations peacekeeping position in Lebanon.

Two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were hurt in the second such incident in two days, the UNIFIL mission said on Friday.

According to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), two UAVs were identified crossing from Lebanon into central Israel. A hit on a civilian building was identified and one UAV was intercepted.

In a post on X, IDF stated, “Since the beginning of the Yom Kippur fast, multiple rocket launches have been identified from Lebanon. A short while ago, two UAVs were identified crossing from Lebanon into central Israel. The UAVs were monitored from the moment they crossed the Lebanese border. A hit on a civilian building was identified and one UAV was intercepted.”

Meanwhile, Hezbollah has warned the Israelis to stay away from Army sites in the residential areas in the north. As the war between Israel and Hamas‘ ally Hezbollah Lebanon intensifies, here’s a list of 10 things that have happened in the past 24 hours:

Israel shut down late on Friday afternoon for Yom Kippur amid the alleged Lebanon airstrikes. This is the first time since 1973 that Israel is engaged in an active war on the Holy Day.
Over 120 rockets were fired at Israel in the first hours of the holiday, sending the Israeli Army in huddle.
While most rockets were intercepted, several rockets fell in open areas and caused fire. There were no reports of injuries or deaths.
Special alert systems were placed to warn the people amid near-constant rocket fire and ongoing tensions with Iran.

Currently, Israeli troops are fighting in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.
Lebanese militant group Hezbollah issued a warning to Israelis, advising them to avoid Israeli military sites located in residential areas in the northern region of the country.
Meanwhile, the United Nations peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon said new explosions hit its headquarters, injuring two peacekeepers a day after Israeli forces targeted the same position and struck central Beirut.

After scattered strikes, Israel has escalated its campaign against Hezbollah with heavy airstrikes across Lebanon and a ground invasion at the border.
Israel is now at war with Hamas in Gaza and Hamas’ ally Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed over 42,000 Palestinians, displacing 90 per cent of the population.

Suhail Hussein Husseini, the head of Hezbollah’s logistical unit, was killed during airstrikes in Beirut on Monday, Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed on Tuesday.
Suhail Hussein Husseini, the head of Hezbollah’s logistical unit, was killed during airstrikes in Beirut on Monday, Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed on Tuesday.

According to the IDF, Husseini was not only in charge of Hezbollah’s logistics and budgeting of its various units but also a member of the Jihad Council, the terror group’s top military body.

The Israeli military shared details of the operation, stating that a strike under the precise direction of the intelligence division killed Husseini in a compound in Beirut on Monday.

Taking to microblogging platform X, the Israeli military posted, “The IDF killed Sohil Hossein Hosseini, the head of the Hezbollah’s logistical headquarters. Yesterday, under the precise direction of the Intelligence Division, Air Force fighter jets targeted the Beirut area and killed Sohil Hossein Hosseini, the head of the Hezbollah terrorist organisation.”

“Husseini played a crucial role in weapon transfers between Iran and Hezbollah and was responsible for distributing the advanced weaponry among Hezbollah’s units, overseeing both the transportation and allocation of these arms,” the IDF said.

Israel claimed that the Hezbollah commander was also coordinating “terrorist attacks against the State of Israel from Lebanon and Syria.”

There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, Iran again warned Israel on Tuesday against any attacks on the Islamic Republic, a week after Tehran fired a barrage of missiles at it, putting the Middle East on edge.

“We recommend the Zionist regime (Israel) not to test the resolution of the Islamic Republic. If any attack against our country takes place, our response will be more powerful,” Reuters quoted Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi in a televised speech.

Any attack on Iran’s infrastructure will be met with a stronger retaliation, and “our enemies know what kind of targets inside the Zionist Regime (Israel) are in our reach,” Araqchi added.

  • Latest World News: Israel-Iran war news: Iranian minister tours site on Netanyahu’s hitlist amid bombing, says ‘not afraid’
In response to Israeli threats, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad visited Kharg Island, emphasizing Iran's resilience. His visit follows missile attacks on Israel and US deliberations on military actions.
As the concerns of potential Israeli air strikes at energy facilities in Iran looms, Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad on Sunday visited Kharg Island, the main export terminal of the country and touted that they are “not afraid”. During the visit, Paknejad reportedly held talks with the naval commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Mohammad Hossein Bargahi.

The minister’s visit comes after an Israeli military spokesman said the country was “preparing a response” after Iran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel this week.

As many as 200 missiles were fired to avenge the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iranian general Abbas Nilforoushan in a September 27 strike on Beirut.

According to Iran oil ministry’s news website, SHANA, Paknejad arrived at the Kharg Island oil facilities in the morning and met with employees.

“We are not afraid that our enemies will ignite a crisis, and visiting the region is a normal business trip,” Paknejad said on state television. He shared that the Kharg Island oil terminal has a capacity to store 23 million barrels of crude.

The oil minister also hailed the Guards for “continuous efforts in maintaining the security” of Iranian oil platforms in the Gulf.

Mohsen Paknejad’s visit follows Israel’s announcement that it was preparing a response to Iran’s missile attack on Tuesday on its territory.

On Thursday, US President Joe Biden said he was “in discussions” with Israel about possible strikes on oil facilities in Iran.

Following the statement, oil prices had surged.

But on Friday, Biden advised Israel against striking Iran’s oil facilities, telling it to find “other alternatives”.

Iran is a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) with production of around 3.2 million barrels per day (bpd), or 3% of global output.

Despite US sanctions, Iranian oil exports have climbed this year to near multi-year highs of 1.7 million bpd. China, which does not recognise US sanctions, is Tehran’s biggest oil customer and according to analysts imported 1.2 to 1.4 million barrels per day from Iran in the first half of 2024.

Following the Israeli threats, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Saturday warned of “a proportional and similar reaction from Iran, and even stronger” should Israel strike Iran.

Israel is currently engaged in a “multi-front war” with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran backs both Hamas and Hezbollah. The war with the Palestinian militant group Hamas started in October when the group launched surprise attacks in parts of Israel.

Iranian-backed Hezbollah, the strongest armed force in Lebanon, began firing rockets into Israel almost immediately after Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, calling it a show of support for the Palestinians. Hezbollah and Israel’s military have traded fire almost daily.

Last week, Israel launched what it called a limited ground operation into southern Lebanon after a series of attacks killed longtime Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others. The fighting is the worst since Israel and Hezbollah fought a brief war in 2006. Nine Israeli soldiers have been killed in the ground clashes that Israel says have killed 440 Hezbollah fighters.

The Israeli military said special forces were carrying out ground raids against Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon. On Saturday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said “Israel has the duty and the right to defend itself and respond to these attacks, and it will do so.” On Lebanon, he said ”we are not done yet.”
