Spending Time With Myself in Sydney
I grew up in a big, boisterous family, constantly surrounded by love—and a swarm of noisy cousins. Thanks to such a pampered upbringing, solitude was a rare luxury. As a kid, I used to dream about escaping to a quiet space of my own, somewhere I wouldn’t have to guard my favourite pair of pants or share my bed with a squirmy little cousin. Eventually, I worked hard and earned that escape. I packed my bags and moved to Australia!
But life here wasn’t quite the peaceful dream I’d imagined. Loneliness crept in like a silent shadow, wrapping itself around me and slowly dimming my light. That’s when I decided to fight back—with intention, joy, and a sprinkle of adventure.
Exploring the City
I made it a point to explore Sydney a little every day. I treated myself to a lovely lunch cruise Sydney Harbour is so well known for, wandered through the Royal Botanic Gardens with picnic supplies in tow, and took a tour of the iconic Opera House. I lost myself in the charm of weekend markets and roamed through narrow laneways bursting with street art and quirky bookstores. Slowly but surely, the once-strange city began to feel like home—a bit chaotic, but warm and welcoming.
Pottery Classes
Wanting to spend my time in a meaningful way, I enrolled in a pottery course just around the corner from my place. I’d always been curious about working with clay, and it turns out I really enjoy handbuilding. These classes quickly became my Saturday afternoon ritual. My apartment is now dotted with delightfully uneven sculptures, and I’ve met some truly wonderful people I look forward to seeing each week.
Cooking Something Special
Cooking has always been my therapy. It calms me and connects me to my roots. So, I began planning my meals more intentionally. Not only did this help me save money, but I also began recreating the dishes my mom and aunts used to make. Every time a dish turned out well, I’d share it with new friends I was making along the way. Food, after all, has always been the purest form of love I know.
Birdwatching Adventures
My love for birds quietly returned during a peaceful morning with a cup of tea by the window. A flash of colour—a tiny, rainbow-hued bird—darted past, and I was instantly enchanted.
