The Future of Web Design: What is coming next and what has not been invented yet?

Internet and technologies are dynamic in nature that means have capacity to change frequently. Hence, web design also grows and evolves as part of the process as well, to a similar extent. Here are some of the trends and novelties that one can expect to work its way into the future of web design.

Responsive Design

The technique of using multiple layouts that work in harmony to fit the size of the device being used, from larger computers to mobile phones, will be integrated in nearly all internet sites. As mobile internet connection remains to be an ever growing trend, a website which is optimized for mobile use will be very important. This year people should expect to see the evolution of highly effective responsive frameworks and tools that improve the effectiveness of responsive design.

Web Design Automation

There will be a rise in the use of bots in the design and development of solutions that otherwise would involve the execution of numerous similar tasks. As we have seen with Webflow and similar platforms where the use of code is not required in creating websites, further innovations will be made to enhance the automation of the web design process. Designers and developers can leverage AI and machine learning to identify user behaviors and preferences and have the layout of a website constructed by these tools automatically. This could go a long way towards making designers much more efficient.

Interactive Interfaces

It will be noticed that websites will also play more than just an informing role and will become extremely interactional and dynamic. Webgl, canvas, svg and advanced JavaScript libraries will enable the kind of animated, game-like experiences that can be delivered through browsers. You should also expect to see the use of the features such as virtual reality, augmented reality incorporated into sites to enrich the experience of the users.

Animation and Motion Design

It is found that animation and motion will be used widely to improve both erosive aesthetic value and practical functions of products. New libraries for web animation such as Greensock are ever emerging to bring more complex timeline animations directly in the browser. Slight interactions and transitions between pages and elements will be a norm in the sense that every interface will need to go through them.

Progressive Web Apps

Apps that are similar to native ones and are designed to be accessed through browsers; can be accessed offline and can even be added to a device’s home screen, called progressive web apps, will become more popular. Alerts and the subsequent real estate of the home screen were originally reserved for native apps on mobile devices. But with PWAs they become possible on the web. PWAs help in achieving the app like interface while at the same time freeing one from app stores for downloads.

Accelerated Mobile Pages

Of the two, Google’s open source program, known as AMP or accelerated mobile pages that enables mobile pages to load at the fastest rate, will likely be used more often. Specifically, it is possible to limit some of the features of JavaScript and reduce the amount of page mass, as the pages built according to the principles of AMP load almost instantly on a mobile device. AMP use should rise, given that site owners increasingly focus on optimizing the experience of mobile users.

WebAssembly

WebAssembly, which is a low-level programming language that can run under the browser environment, will begin to be active in multiple web applications within the next few years. It makes it possible to achieve near-native application use when complex activities such as gaming, video processing or artificial intelligence are run within the browser. At the moment, raw JavaScript has difficulties in handling such heavy loads.

Headless CMS

Advantages such as leveraging a headless CMS to deliver content through APIs, instead of pre-built pages, will experience a notable growth. It allows the content developed within the CMS to be viewed on any platform or interface. Therefore, depending on the type of interface, be it a web app, mobile app, smart display or even an augmented reality platform, the same content generated through the CMS can be used.

Conversational Interfaces

Social media bots, and voice-enabled interfaces are in demand. Be ready for the growth of conversational UI components, such as chatbots or voice interface for input. These make interactions with the computer extremely natural, but the technology is still rather immature at the present time.

Component-Driven Design

Creating interfaces of further interactions from componentized and reusable parts will become more popular. Reuse through Custom Elements and the shadow DOM is possible with Web component standards. When used together with JavaScript frameworks such as React, the component based architecture enables cooperation and accelerates the development process.

No-Code Site Builders

Web based tools such as Webflow, Wix and Squarespace which uses drag and drop interface instead of codes will also advance and remain a threat to the traditional hand coders who design website. It enables its users to build up new and stylish web sites of the present generations, with active and dynamic interfaces, even without competencies in Web development. Featuring installations, animations, and CMS compatibility, these devices are beneficial for freelance designers, small agencies, and business owners.

Visual Design Trends

On the visual aesthetics side, we are likely to observe intricate and hand made like sketchy interfaces, additional 3D illustrated elements, cheerful gradients, fun micro-interactions, thick and bold typefaces and asymmetric layouts in website designs. This is valid since people are realizing the importance of using fonts that give a more artisanal, human touch, such as serif and script fonts. Of course, bright and cheerful shades which are associated with happiness and optimism will dominate as well.

Final Thoughts

The focus on user experience will be brought to its apex as most sites will work towards delivering content across devices and exploring different ways on how to engage the users. Web designers will incorporate progressive web designs in site design to create better impressions with visitors. With automation and AI helping out in some of the aspects, future roles of web designers will shift from creating the layouts of the pages to the curation and stewarding of real-time and ever-growing interfaces. Oh yeah, it seems that there won’t be a single day that digital experiences fail to innovate and entertain us!
