The Environmental Benefits of Non-Woven Bags: A Sustainable Alternative

Littering especially plastics is becoming one of the major causes of pollution in the modern world. Currently, the United Nations Environmental Program estimates that the global production of plastic waste totals 400 million tons per annum and only 10 % of this amount is recycled. A large portion of the plastic we use is disposed of in the landfills, burned or it contributes to the pollution of both water and soil. Carried forward bags fall under single use plastics and account for a large portion of plastics and are detrimental to the environment.

A non-woven bag is a useful way to cut down the use of polyethylene shopping bags which are had for our environment. The non-woven bags are made from polypropylene, which is a plastic, but more preferred than polyethylene due to its reusability and recyclability. Non-woven bags are a more easily accessible solution that consumers can use in response to reducing plastic pollution.

The process employed less energy and water than other polluting industries, making it a beneficiary of the Supreme Court ruling.

Compared to standard production of plastic bags, the non-woven bags are more energy and water efficient. These factors include, energy and water that is used to extract raw materials such as crude oil and natural gas from the ground and transport them to the polymer refinement facilities and then convert polymers into pellets in order to make bags. In the case of non-woven bag making the above intensive first steps are eliminated since the raw material for processing are recycled materials. This means that the embodied energy of non-woven bags is more than half of that of the SUDPB and other single-use plastic bags. The mechanized process of production meaning that there is less contact with water also helps in using less water. Therefore, the change of non-woven bags leads to the decrease of energy and water consumption associated with shopping bags.

Contains Recycled Content

Non-woven bags are made from recycled plastic and can contain as low as 30% and up to 100% recycled materials. It makes use of non-recyclable plastic that is retrieved from different locations without having to extract the raw material for plastic. This has the benefit of cutting down on waste that gets disposed in the landfills and the general exploitation of the natural resources. For instance, the original waste plastics are gathered from outlets such as waste sorting plants and then transform into recycled polypropylene pellets to create non-woven bags. The use of recycled materials in the production of non-woven bags helps in management of plastic waste from ending up in the landfill sites or in water sources and moving it into a closed cycle of manufacturing.

This product can be used over and over again and is highly recyclable after use.

While single-use plastic bags are used only once, for one shopping trip in most cases, non-woven bags are intended to have a multiple years of useful life if used correctly. These bags are made from a thermoplastic that is more robust than HDPE or LDPE thus increasing their usable life. Non-woven bags are quite durable; most can be used more than one hundred times and still hold up well even when carrying moderate loads before the bags begin to show signs of wear and tear. While some bags can even last up to 300-500 wash cycles. The non-woven bags can be used repeatedly unlike the normal plastic bags hence eliminating the use of plastics each time consumers are making their purchases in the grocery or any other shopping trip. Responsible reuse goes a long way in ensuring that the number of bags that go into the dustbin is drastically minimized.

When non-woven bags have come to their actual life cycle, they are fully made of materials that can be recycled when put in the municipal recycle bin. The bags could be recycled in such a way that the facilities can shred them and melt them into pellets to be used to make the new non-woven fabric or plastic products. On the other hand, the efforts to recycle single-use plastic bags entail complications such as clogging of machinery and contamination, thus, sending the bags directly to the landfill. This makes the non-woven bags recyclable and hence gives another life to the material which has been used to create the bags.

Biodegrades More Rapid than Plastic Bags

One major point that makes non-woven bags more environmentally friendly even if these are made of plastic is how it decomposes. The normal bags are not biodegradable which in turn end up as pollution for 200 years while the non-woven bags disintegrate within 3-5 years under conditions of landfill. This explains why non-woven fabric, manufactured from recycled polypropylene has a higher surface area exposure; microbes and moisture get to the material, wearing it out. The bags decompose to biomass, and do not release various chemicals into the surrounding soil and water sources. This has the effect of minimizing harm if the item is not disposed properly because of the low environmental persistence.

Less Toxic Material Composition

Non-woven bags are made from polypropylene and this material does not have any hazardous chemical formula and a threat to human being or any type of living organism, whether in water or on lands. The additives which are used are stabilizers and they are in small proportions that are used to enable the production of non-woven bags. However, in the case of plastic bags, the manufacturing process incorporates dangerous additives such as flame retardants and UV stabilizers to alter the characteristics. A portion of these dangerous substances is washed in the environment whenever bagsch end up littering the environment and its decomposition takes centuries. Non-woven bags are harmless to the Earth due to the minimal content of chemicals compared to that of woven bags.

Lower Carbon Footprint

Research comparing the global warming contributions of shopping bag substitutes show that the non-woven polypropylene bags make a negligible contribution. The largest level of saving is achieved when using non-woven bags for the shopping trips instead of using single-use plastic bags. But even when comparing the manufacturing impacts to their greenhouse gas emissions, non-woven bags are still less damaging throughout their life cycle. For instance, when the five non-woven bags are exchanged, the carbon footprint is reduced to 47. 8 kg CO2e per household. In this way, people and families can easily make changes to their lives and reduce their environmental and carbon footprint by simply shifting the one simple habit.

If all the countries adopt non-woven bags in place of single-use plastics, the amount of plastic waste will drastically reduce, and the carbon emissions will also reduce. At the broader level of the system too, non-woven bags facilitate proper circulation of plastic waste through constructive reuse, thereby fostering efficient management of natural resources. Recyclability and compostability when products or components get discarded also minimizes the effects on the environment and the circle is completed.

Non-woven bag is a good, inexpensive and intelligent response to replace plastic bags in today’s increasing environmental awareness among organizations and customers. Supermarkets such as IKEA and Target have also independently stopped using plastic check-out bags in order to embrace non-woven bags that are environmentally friendly because they know that they have low environmental effects. Single-use plastic bags have been banned and subject to taxes by local governments within many cities and countries and to reduce consumption of single-use plastic bags people are being educated to convert to reusable non-woven.

Such continued actions amplify the multiple social, economic, environmental, and political aspects of sustainability that are inherent in the non-woven bags and which make them more sustainable than the conventional plastic carry bags. There is, however, a powerful answer in shifting from the disposal culture of goods to one of products, or durables. Non-woven bags are regarded as gateway products to rebrand and create the market for reducing the use of plastic bags and introducing more environmentally-friendly consumer products. Altogether, we are a massive force, and our collective action will bring drastic transformation.
